Akon To Create a Real Life Wakanda

The Rapper Akon Is Building a Real Life Wakanda

Akon, born Aliaune Damala Badara Akon Thiam in Missouri, U.S.A. is better known for his hits such as 'Smack That', 'Lonely' and 'Sorry, Blame It On Me' .

Over the years he has been re-inventing himself and putting his time and resources behind humanitarian efforts such as his 'Light Up Africa'.

This initiative started in 2014 that has so far helped over 600 million Africans across the continent without a permanent source of light, to tap the potential of solar power.

The latest project he has embarked upon is no less impressive and will be implemented in his country of cultural descent, Senegal.

In 2018, at the Cannes Lion International Festival of Creativity Akon unveiled his plans to build 'Akon Crypto City' on a panel called Branding Africa: Blockchain, Entrepreneurship and Empowering The Future.

The city will be constructed on 2,000 acres of land in Senegal gifted to him by the country's president. The city will be ideally positioned less than ten minutes away from Blaise Diagne, the new international airport and close to the capital, Dakar.

The site would be home to his cryptocurrency 'Akoin' which he stated will be “the saviour of Africa” a place where all transactions will be entirely done by cryptocurrency. Akon believes that cryptocurrency would provide the city and the Senegalese with better financial security therefore eradicating many of the abuses committed by corrupt government institutions.

Akon hopes that the city will function like a real life 'Wakanda', a fictional African futuristic city depicted in Marvel's 2018 film Black Panther.

Indeed, in a continent where the majority of people in remote areas do not have access to banks and transaction costs have a higher premium, cryptocurrency would allow millions of people to leapfrog traditional banking methods.

Cryptocurrency is built around blockchain technology meaning transactions are recorded in real time and can be traced back. It also means that it's extremely difficult for governments to manipulate and allows it's users to transact with financial markets across the world and thus enabling the opportunity to create trade and employment.
